India Downloaded More Vertical Dramas Than Any Country on Earth Last Year. It Was Not Even Close.
In July 2025, India recorded 21 million vertical drama app downloads in a single month. That was 191% growth from the previous month. No other country came close to that number.
The reason is obvious if you think about it for five seconds. 96% of internet access in India happens on mobile. 81% of Indian viewers exclusively stream on their phones. The average user consumes 55 to 60 minutes of short video every day. India did not need to adapt to vertical content. It was already there.
Behind Kuku TV, there is Pocket TV, MX Fatafat (Amazon), ShareChat's QuickTV with 40 million monthly viewers, Zee's Bullet, Hoichoi's Sooper, and a wave of others. JioHotstar announced it will enter micro-drama production by early 2026. When Jio moves into a content category, the job market follows.
And here is what matters if you work in this space or want to: 50% of OTT content consumed in India is in regional languages. That means vertical drama production is not just a Mumbai thing. It is happening in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Bangla, and more. The demand for writers, actors, directors, and crew who can work in regional languages is growing faster than anyone expected.
